Strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fortitude<\/span><\/strong> Lexicon of Freemasonry \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Albert. G. Mackey<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">One of the four cardinal virtues, whose excellencies are dilated on in the first degree. It not only instructs the worthy Mason to bear the ills of life with becoming resolution, \u201ctaking up arms against a sea of trouble\u201d but, by its intimate connection with a portion of our ceremonies, it teaches him to let no dangers shake, no pains dissolve the inviolable fidelity he owes to the trusts imposed in him.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fortitude<\/span><\/strong> Freemason\u2019s Guide and Compendium\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bernard E, Jones \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Page 290<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">To support a Brother.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In that these definitions, while accurate, did not give me a clear message I decided to look at my Thesaurus and lo and behold here is what I found.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fortitude<\/span> Webster\u2019s New Complete Thesaurus<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Noun.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A quality of character combining courage and staying power.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Synonym (the same or almost the same) backbone, grit, guts, intestinal fortitude, moxie, nerve, sand, spunk.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Related words Courage, mettle, pith, resoluteness, resolution, spirit, stick-to-itiveness, tenacity,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Boldness. Bravery, courageousness, dauntlessness, fearlessness, intrepidity, valiancy, valor, valorousness, endurance, stamina, strength, constancy, determination, perseverance.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Comment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now, I believe I better understand what our ancient brethren had in mind when they included this word as a Cardinal Virtue.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think back through life to the times when I was faced with the choice of doing the <strong>\u201cEXPEDIENT<\/strong>\u201d thing and\/or being faced with situations where \u201c<strong>THE END WOULD JUSTIFY THE MEANS\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I grow older I fervently believe that it is in situations such as this that we have the opportunity to identify ourselves as <strong>MASONS<\/strong> by doing what we <strong>KNOW<\/strong> to be <strong>RIGHT.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember to look for the <strong>FOUR TASSELS<\/strong> located in your Lodge Room and think of them as a constant reminder of the <strong>CARDINAL VIRTUES.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Norm<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fortitude        Webster\u2019s New Collegiate Dictionary<\/p>\n<p>   1.
