Researchers at Bitdefender Labs have recently seen waves of fraudulent and malicious emails exploiting the humanitarian crisis and charitable spirit of people across the globe.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine is a gold mine for scammers and criminal groups who are using fraudulent emails and SMS messages asking recipients to donate money.\u00a0 Scammers are impersonating the Ukrainian government and international humanitarian agencies.<\/p>\n

To stay safe from these malicious attacks and others, here are some recommendations from the Bitdefender team.<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

#1\u00a0 <\/strong>Don’t open emails or attachments from untrusted senders,<\/strong> especially if they try to induce a sense of urgency, no matter how \u2018official\u2019 they seem.<\/p>\n

#2<\/strong>\u00a0 Look out for emails asking for donations, even ones using trusted names of organizations.<\/strong>
\nIf you want to donate, go to directly to the charity organization website to make a donation.<\/p>\n

#3<\/strong>\u00a0 Beware of text messages from unknown senders.<\/strong>
\nIf you don’t know the sender, don’t click links arriving via instant messaging apps or SMS and block the caller.<\/p>\n

#4<\/strong>\u00a0 Be aware of misinformation campaigns.<\/strong>
\nThe use of \u201cdeepfakes\u201d and other methods to spread misinformation is on the rise. A red flag is a message that urges you to share that information further. Before you send along the message, be sure it\u2019s from a trusted source.

\n#5<\/strong>\u00a0 Use strong passwords for your online accounts.<\/strong>
\nPasswords that are unique, long (at least 12 characters), and feature multiple characteristics and combinations are the most secure. Make sure you use a different password for each account. A password manager<\/em><\/strong><\/a> can help simplify management and keep you safe.

\n#6<\/strong>\u00a0 Use a virtual private network (VPN) on all public WiFi connections.<\/strong>
\nVPNs like Bitdefender add an additional layer of protection between your devices and the internet. Most public hotspots offer little privacy protection.
