{"id":172,"date":"2008-05-25T12:26:05","date_gmt":"2008-05-25T19:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theeduca.mywhc.ca\/?p=172"},"modified":"2008-05-25T12:26:05","modified_gmt":"2008-05-25T19:26:05","slug":"bible-openings-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ashlarcollege.ca\/ashlar-archived\/bible-openings-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bible Openings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bible Openings<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A Brother recently asked me what were the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Proper&#8221;<\/span> openings when using the Bible as the V.O.S.L<\/p>\n<p>I promptly give him my personal opinion, then went to the Bible on our Altar and found it to be different.<\/p>\n<p>The shock on my face was evident and made me immediately seek out an answer which could be shared with others in the same position.<\/p>\n<p>This paper will relate the results of my research, which has included my own library, plus a few phone calls to recognized authorities, however material on this subject has been very hard to find and the only author I have found who dealt with this subject has been Harry Carr.\u00a0\u00a0 I now share his opinions with you:-<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bible Openings\u00a0 Question #60\u00a0 &#8220;Freemason at Work&#8221; by Harry Carr\u00a0 (1977)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Customs vary considerably in different parts of the country, and the following notes are designed to show some of the best-known procedures. I have added a brief note, in each case, indicating the essential Masonic significance of the passages quoted.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest French exposure of the Ceremonies, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Reception d&#8217;un Frey-Macon<\/em><\/span>, states that the E.A. took his obligation with his right hand on the Gospel of St John, and this is confirmed by the next oldest French Version, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Le Secret des Francs-Macons<\/em><\/span>, of 1742.<\/p>\n<p>Several later documents of this period indicate that the V.S.L was usually opened at St John 1 Chapter 5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the beginning was the word etc.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Three Distinct Knocks<\/span>, <\/em>an English exposure of 1760, gave different pages for all three Degrees:<\/p>\n<p>First Degree \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The Second Epistle of Peter, with its reference to brotherly kindness and charity<\/p>\n<p>Second Degree \u00a0The story, from Judges, 12, of the test of the Ephraimites.<\/p>\n<p>Third Degree \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I Kings Chapter 7.\u00a0 the final details of Solomon&#8217;s Pillars<\/p>\n<p>Cartwright, in his <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Commentary on Freemasonic Ritual, <\/em><\/span>cites the procedure on Old Yorkshire Lodges where the following is customary:<\/p>\n<p>First Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Psalm 133, &#8216; Behold how good etc.<\/p>\n<p>Second Degree \u00a0\u00a0 Amos, Chapter 7 Verse 7 \u00a0The Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline etc.<\/p>\n<p>Third Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Ecclesiastes, 12, Then the dust shall return to the Earth as it was etc.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Bristol Working<\/em><\/span> is unusual in that the Master actually quotes, during the Three Opening Ceremonies,<\/p>\n<p>the full texts from the pages on which the V.S.L. has to be opened i.e.<\/p>\n<p>First Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Ruth, 2, Verse 19. The Story of Ruth and Boaz<\/p>\n<p>Second Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Judges, 12, Verses, 5&amp;6 \u00a0\u00a0The test of the Ephraimites.<\/p>\n<p>Third Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Gen, 4 Verses 5-22 \u00a0\u00a0The Birth of Jabal &amp; Jubal who are mentioned in the Old Charges.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there is no official Grand Lodge Ruling on this question, and few of the &#8220;named&#8221; rituals prescribe any particular page-openings for the three Degrees<\/p>\n<p>Cartwright states that the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Perfect Ceremonies<\/span>, <\/em>in their Editions from 1918 onwards, specify Second Chronicles. Chapter 6, as a standard &#8216;opening&#8217; for all Degrees; it deals with Solomon&#8217;s prayer at the consecration of the Temple.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, Cartwright agrees with the widespread practice, in <strong>English Lodges<\/strong><em>, <\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">where a haphazard opening of the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">V.S.L. suffices<\/span><\/em>, but if a particular page is to stay open through all Degrees, he favours, Second Corinthians\u00a0 2, which is prescribed in the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">English Ritual.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>That passage deals with the preliminaries to the building of the Temple, and of Solomon&#8217;s first embassage to Hiram, King of Tyre, asking for timber, etc, and a &#8220;man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A <em>German<\/em> correspondent writes to say that many Lodges in that country use the following:<\/p>\n<p>First Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 John, 1,1.\u00a0 In the beginning was the word etc.<\/p>\n<p>Second Degree Matthew 22, Verse 39.\u00a0 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself etc.<\/p>\n<p>Third Degree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2nd Chronicles. 6.
