MY  GPS

For those of us who lack the sense of direction and are too proud to ask “WHERE AM I ”            this should provide some amusement and cause for reflection. It is titled “My GPS”  and was created by M.W. Bro. Mike Saunders  Grand Lodge of Washington F&AM. in 2008.

About a year ago I broke down and bought myself a GPS device for my car. What a Godsend. You see I am terrible at directions. You would not believe the number of hours that I have spent in various cities and towns throughout our state trying to get to a Lodge building, church, community center, or some other building where I needed to be.

Although I would never dream of setting out on one of these journeys without directions, which were usually a map and turn-by-turn directions from Mapquest, invariably there would be a street sign that wasn’t clearly marked, or a fork in the road that I was not expecting. When one of these happened (and they always did) I would have to make a decision about which way to turn, whether I had gone too far or not far enough, and at what point was I going to admit that I was LOST.

Now when I am going somewhere, not only do I have the map and directions, but they are located where I can clearly see them, AND there is a nice lady that tells me where to turn, how far to go, and when I have arrived at my destination. Even more amazing, when I do make a mistake, she tells me something is wrong and helps me get back on track, so I am once again headed in the right direction and the effect of my error is minimized.  This like I said, it’s a Godsend.

Life is a journey. We start off with a destination we hope to arrive at. Although the specific destination to which each of us is traveling is individual and personal, there are a few points that are pretty common.

We want to be happy, we want to make a positive difference in our communities, and at the end of our lives we want to be embraced by the Great Architect of the Universe and given a seat of honour in his Grand Lodge. But our journey is not very simple.

The road we are on is not straight and will not take us directly to our destination. We need to make many turns along the way and we will encounter several forks in the road.

Having a map and good directions are critical.  We receive these from our families, our education, and our faith in God.

We, as Masons, have another advantage, a GPS, if you will, provided in part by the Three Great Lights in Masonry. But the most effective component of that GPS is our Brethren. They stand at every corner, intersection, and fork in the road to point us in the right direction. If we should make a wrong turn, they are there to whisper in our ear, reminding us of where we are trying to go, and guiding us back to the correct route. And while we are making those corrections, they defend our character if anyone should question it.

You see, the most important benefit we have as Freemasons is the Love & Fellowship of our Brethren.

Our various rituals, ceremonies and symbols, as powerful and effective as they are at imprinting on our minds all of the moral lessons of our Craft, are not nearly as significant to our successful journey through life as the love of our Brethren, working together to strengthen each other, their families, and their community.

That is truly a GODSEND.  M.W. Bro. Michael Sanders

The End of the Road Is But a Bend in the Road

When we feel we have nothing else to give

And we are sure that the “song has ended”–

When our day seems over and the shadows fall

And the darkness of night has descended,

Where can we go to find the strength

To valiantly keep on trying,

Where van we find the hand that will dry

The tears that the heart is crying–

There’s but one place to do and that is to GOD

And dropping all pretense and pride.

We can pour out our problems without restraint

And gain strength with him at our side–

And together we stand at life’s crossroads

And view what we think is the end,

But GOD has a much bigger vision

And HE tells us it’s ONLY A BEND—-

For the road goes on and is smoother,

And the “pause in the song” is a “rest”

And the part that’s unsung and unfinished

Is the sweetest and richest and best—–

So rest and relax and grow stronger.

LET GO and LET GOD share your load,

Your work is not finished or ended,

You’ve just come to “A BEND IN THE ROAD”

From Someone Cares by Helen Steiner Rice

Think , Act….. Live

Would you rather be right or Happy”              Tom Crum

“What make men and women great is their ability to decide what is important,

and then focus their attention on it”                 Goethe

The Pillars

by MasterMason

THE PILLARS

taken from Chapters 2 & 3 of The Meaning of Masonry by William W. Wilmshurst

In his book Wilmshurst makes the comment that anyone could devote many many papers to a study of the Pillars, however, I found great value in the esoteric explanation he did provide and I will attempt to share my understanding with you.

As our Lectures state there are Three Great Pillars, i.e. Ionic (Wisdom); Doric (Strength) and Corinthian (Beauty). Of these the Ionic is located in the East and is represented by The Master of the Lodge with the other two to be located immediately within the entrance to the Temple at the North West corner.

It is recognized again that, for structural reasons this is not possible in some cases, this is, nonetheless, the appropriate location.

It is also worth noting that at York Minster, Westminster Abbey and other great Christian edifices, the main doors are located in the West with the Altar in the East.

This again points out that the quest for education and light is perceived to be a journey from West to East.

History also informs us that “Two Great Pillars” have always been a prominent feature of buildings housing all great religious systems and philosophies for many centuries, and have always stood at the entrance.

WHY  ESOTERICALLY

Starting at the North West corner, we note that the characteristic of the Pillar on the left is Strength and that on the right Beauty, and it is between these two pillars that we esoterically enter the Temple.

From my readings, I believe that these pillars represent “the pair of Opposites” and “duality” experienced by us all in the course of our daily living and the challenges we face to stay in Balance.

I refer to the constant struggle between:= Good/Evil===Light/Darkness===White/Black===Positive/Negative ===Temptation/Conscience=== Truth/Falsehood.

In science we see the Positive/Negative poles in electricity and the Red/White corpuscles in our own bodies and without the balancing of which we would all perish. Many many more examples are available to demonstrate this point, however, the few I have given should suffice for the purpose of this paper.

By recognizing these as realities it becomes readily apparent that in order for PERFECTION to be accomplished all existence would need to be in PERFECT BALANCE.

Thus by coming the realization that we are not perfect and in fact constantly out of balance we look to Masonry and it’s Lessons and Lectures to assist us in improving our balance and bringing STABILITY to our lives.

Having dealt with Strength, Beauty and Stability, we are now left with Wisdom which I believe is not only represented by our Worshipful Master but all those guides, mentors and leaders in the Craft to whom we look for guidance and direction.   The greatest of which is of course the G.A.O.T.U.

Comment

Undoubtedly, much more could be written about the design, decoration, construction etc. of the Pillars, however, the above is intended for education at the initiate level and those of our families who get to read incoming emails.  I am of the opinion that if our families understand the basics of who and what we are as Masons they will have the opportunity to appreciate and support our personal quest.

Conclusion

Thank you all, once again, for allowing me to meet with you in this way, it is truly a privilege. Ideas as to future papers continue to be received and are greatly appreciated.  Keep it up, I love the research.

Have a wonderful day and God Bless You and Yours

Norm.

Crack Pots

by MasterMason

Fraternal Greetings Brethren.

Frequently, when I am searching for something to communicate, I receive a GEM from one of my fellow Brothers of associates.

The same has happened once again and I have recorded below a beautiful “VIEW ON LIFE AND THE EFFECTS WE COULD HAVE ON OTHERS” A huge thank you to Bro. Doug McDougall for sharing this with us.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CRACK POTS A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of a long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and one half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of it’s accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of it’s own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer on day by the stream. The Pot said “ I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and don’t get full value for your efforts” The Bearer said to the pot “ Did you notice that there were flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side”? That’s because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. “Without you being just the what you are, there would not be this beauty to grace my home.”

MORAL Each of us has our own unique FLAWS. We’re all cracked pots, but it is the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so interesting and rewarding. You’ve got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall be bent out of shape. Remember to appreciate all the different people in your life ==

including all your CRACK POT  FRIENDS.

A Living Proverb Determination to be wise, is the first step toward becoming wise! and with your wisdom develop common sense and good judgment. If you exalt wisdom, she will exalt you. Hold her fast and she will lead you to great honour, she will place a beautiful crown on your head. Listen and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life.

Sincerely & Fraternally Norman McEvoy
